What Is Line-Caught Fish and Why Does It Matter?
August 7, 2026Brixham is primarily known as a white fish port, and rightly so. But the waters around the South Devon coast and across the wider English Channel support some of the finest shellfish in the country, and summer is when the best of it lands at the market. At Fishionados, we try to put it on the menu when the quality is right and the price reflects what it actually is.
Here is what is in season now and what you need to know about it.
Brown Crab: The South West Classic
The brown or edible crab (Cancer pagurus) is the most commercially important shellfish species landed at Brixham and across the South West. A mature brown crab has a broad, oval shell and produces two very different types of meat: the firm white claw and leg meat, and the richer, creamier brown body meat. Both have distinct uses and distinct flavours.
Brown crab is at its best in summer when the animals have had time to feed and fill out following the moult. Pot-caught Brixham crab, handled well, is among the finest shellfish available in the UK. The difference between a freshly cooked Brixham crab and the processed crab meat sold in supermarket tubs is considerable.
When we have dressed crab on the menu at Fishionados, it has been cooked and prepared in-house from whole crabs landed at Brixham. It is not a mass-produced product.
Lobster: The Occasional Luxury
European lobster (Homarus gammarus) is pot-caught by inshore boats working along the rocky reef areas off the Devon and Cornish coasts. The lobster season runs year-round, but summer availability from local potters is generally good and the quality of locally caught lobster eaten near the point of landing is exceptional.
The European lobster is the finest eating lobster in the world. Its flesh is firmer and sweeter than the Canadian or Norwegian imports that dominate restaurant menus. When we have it, it goes on the specials. It is worth asking.
Scallops: Hand-Dived Is the Gold Standard
King scallops (Pecten maximus) are landed at Brixham from both dredge and hand-dive fisheries. Hand-dived scallops are selectively harvested by divers, which eliminates the habitat damage associated with scallop dredging and produces a cleaner, undamaged shell. They are more expensive to produce, and the price reflects this.
A freshly landed hand-dived scallop, cooked simply with butter and a little seasoning, is one of the definitive flavours of the South West coast in summer. When the quality of what is landing at Brixham market justifies putting them on the menu, we do.
How to Know What’s On
Shellfish availability varies week to week depending on what is landing and what the quality is like. The most reliable way to know what we have is to follow us on Facebook, where we post specials when they are in, or simply to ask when you arrive.
A menu that changes with the catch is, we think, the only honest way to run a fish restaurant near Brixham.
